Each crew member had to train rigorously and fight strong opponents to get better. However, the outcome of their fights wasn’t always in their favor. This happened several times when the Straw Hats had to fight someone far superior and they had to rely on others to rescue them from certain death. Needless to say, without the intervention of these One Piece characters, the Straw Hats would have been different from how we know them.

7/7 Bartholomew Kuma

Bartholomew Kuma is a former Shichibukai, and he served as a minor antagonist in the Thriller Bark arc. Kuma possesses the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, a paramecia type devil fruit that caused his hands to grow soft paw-like pads. These structures enable him to repel all sorts of things, including attacks.

After his appearance in Thriller Bark, Kuma reappeared during the Sabaody Archipelago arc. Initially, it seemed like Kuma was destroying the entire Straw Hat crew, but in reality, he was sending them away so that they could train and become better fighters. Furthermore, by sending them away, Kuma ensured that the crew would not be captured by Kizaru and the other Marines.

6/7 Shanks

Shanks is a very popular One Piece character, who has only made a handful of appearances in the series so far. Every time he graces the screen, the fans go wild because of his impeccable dialogue and ridiculous aura.

Despite his limited appearances, Shanks has been involved in several important events in the series. He saved Luffy from the Master of the Near Sea when he was still a kid. Shanks also stopped the Paramount War and ensured that Luffy would safely get off the island.

5/7 Silvers Rayleigh

Silvers Rayleigh is the right-hand man of the late Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. After the Roger Pirates disbanded, Rayleigh kept a low profile so that the Marines wouldn’t harass him. Rayleigh didn’t make an appearance in the series until the Sabaody Archipelago arc.

In the arc, Rayleigh met the Straw Hats, and he was immediately impressed with Luffy. Not long after meeting them, the Straw Hats were engaged in a fierce battle with Kizaru and the Navy. Suffice it to say, the battle was very one-sided and if Rayleigh had not intervened, the Straw Hats would have been captured. Silvers Rayleigh joined hands with Bartholomew Kuma, which allowed the Straw Hats to avoid being captured.

4/7 Trafalgar Law

Trafalgar Law allied with the Straw Hats during the Punk Hazard arc. The goal behind the formation of the alliance was to take down Doflamingo and Kaido. After defeating Caesar and Vergo, the alliance headed towards Dressrosa, where they would have to face Donquixote Doflamingo.

On Dressrosa, the Straw Hats split into two groups— Luffy’s group and Sanji’s group. Sanji’s group was holding Caesar and Giolla hostage, and for this reason, Doflamingo turned his attention toward them. He easily overwhelmed Sanji, and it seemed that they would be killed by the former Shichibukai, but luckily for them, Trafalgar Law arrived in the nick of time. Law distracted Doflamingo, which allowed Sanji’s group to escape with their lives.

3/7 Bon Clay

Bon Clay is among the kindest characters in the series. Initially, Bon Clay was an enemy of the Straw Hats, but after Crocodile’s defeat, he became a very close friend of the crew. He called the crew and told them that he had hidden their ship from the Marines. When the Marines started chasing them, Bon Clay and his group impersonated the Straw Hats and decided to stay behind., which allowed the Straw Hats to escape.

Bon Clay was imprisoned in Impel Down where he would meet Luffy once again. Luffy had to escape from Impel Down to save Ace, but there were many tough opponents standing in his way. Bon Clay solved this problem by staying behind to prevent the Impel Down jailers from chasing Luffy.

2/7 Pedro

Pedro was the captain of the Nox Pirates and the leader of the Guardians of the Mink Tribe. He was heavily inspired by Gol D. Roger and wanted to set sail with him, a request that the Pirate King declined. Pedro was a part of the Sanji Retrieval Team, which sailed to Whole Cake Island to rescue Sanji.

As the team successfully managed to take Sanji back, they decided to go to the Thousand Sunny. They were shocked to see that it had been trapped by Perospero. With no other option left, Pedro decided to blow himself up to free the ship, thus ensuring the Straw Hats would leave Big Mom’s territory without any further problems.

1/7 Portgas D. Ace

Portgas D. Ace interacted with the Straw Hats during the Alabasta arc, and at that time, the crew was in trouble as Smoker was chasing them. Luckily for them, Ace was there to save the day. He used the power of his devil fruit to stall Smoker and let the Straw Hats reach their ship.

Ace also protected Luffy from Blackbeard, who wanted to capture his younger brother and turn him over to the Marines. Ace fought Blackbeard to ensure that no harm would come to his brother. During the Marineford arc, Ace jumped in front of Akainu’s attack and saved Luffy from being killed.
