M3GAN, the latest entry in the ‘killer doll’ genre of horror films, is moving its release date up by one week. The move comes after the trailer for the film has gone viral on social media platforms, where the doll has already found a cult of followers.

M3GAN was initially scheduled for release on January 13, 2023. The upcoming Blumhouse horror film features Allison Williams as Gemma, a genius roboticist who works for a toy company. When her niece, Katie (Violet McGraw), is unexpectedly orphaned in a car accident, Gemma takes her in. Gemma struggles with parenthood, however, and decides to use her latest project to help raise Katie. That latest project is the Model 3 Generative Android, or M3GAN for short. Designed to be both a parent and child’s greatest ally, M3GAN becomes hostile to any who may harm Katie and sets off on a killing spree.

According to a report Deadline, M3GAN has moved up its release date by one week. Now set to release on January 6, 2023, the reasons for the move are unknown based on Deadline’s report. It is known, though, that M3GAN has gained a cult following on social media, which may mean the studio is eager to capitalize on the hype surrounding the film and release it earlier than intended.

The “meetM3GAN” social media account has recently gone viral for feuding with the Chucky Twitter account, which is currently promoting Chucky season 2. The Twitter beef between the two seems to have brought some joy to fans, and there’s likely a lot of overlap in the audience for the two franchises, which both focus on killer dolls. The marketing ploy seems to be working well, with M3GAN’s dance moves having become a Twitter meme overnight, and the MGM YouTube account having reuploaded the 2019 Child’s Play reboot trailer onto its YouTube channel in the wake of M3GAN‘s trailer release.

M3GAN appears to have found its niche. The trailer, which featured a few campy scenes, pairs well with Chucky’s overall vibe and humor. M3GAN‘s social media accounts are leaning heavily into that to great success. If the film does perform well, which it seems the studio is predicting it just might, then perhaps a crossover between the two franchises could work. While the original Child’s Play focused on Chucky as a possessed doll, the recent reboot actually featured him as a rogue AI much like M3GAN.

It’s entirely possible the franchises may end up taking place in the same universe. For now, it looks like Universal moving up the release date, even if just by one week, is a good sign of faith in the project.

M3GAN hits theaters on January 6, 2023.
