Developer Rockstar Games releases a surprise update for the beleaguered Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition across consoles and PC.

Developer Rockstar Games has released a surprise update for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition across all versions of the game on PC and consoles. The release of the 1.04.5 update for the title comes on the heels of previous Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition patches which attempted to fix the multitude of bugs present in the game when it was released in late 2021.

Following months of speculation and rumors about remastered releases of the classic GTA games, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition quickly became one of the most hotly anticipated games of 2021 after its existence was confirmed by Rockstar. Developed by Grove Street Games, the collection brought together remastered versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Although a commercial success, with Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition selling over 10 million copies, the collection was savaged by critics and fans alike due to a multitude of graphical and gameplay bugs present upon release.

The latest patch for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is title update 1.04.5, and it is available now for both consoles and PC. Unlike some previous updates to the game, no specifics are given for what is included in the update, with the patch notes simply stating “Stability improvements across all three titles on all platforms.” Many users of the Rockstar Games support page seemingly found this vague description less than informative, as the responses to the “Was this article helpful?” question on the update page showed a resounding answer of “No” from users.

Franchise fans who felt burned by the multitude of bugs present in the GTA trilogy’s release are surely hoping this new patch includes some real improvements to the title, as many players continue to experience sometimes game-breaking bugs in the remastered collection. Although Rockstar has continued to patch the game since its release, the response to the bugs from parent company Take-Two Interactive has left a sour taste in many gamers’ mouths. In an interview with CNBC in early 2022, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick dismissed complaints about the game, raising the ire of many fans of the franchise.

The GTA franchise has become iconic in the gaming industry since the release of GTA 3 in 2001, shaping the tone and gameplay of countless titles that followed in its wake. As titles like GTA: Vice City turn 20 this year, many fans of the franchise feel that the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition failed to do justice to these beloved titles that deserve so much better. As Rockstar directs its attention to the upcoming GTA VI, fans of the trilogy may have a long wait before the trilogy gets the fixes it truly deserves.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
