James Gunn is in hushed talks at Warner Bros. DIscovery to head one or more new projects based on DC comic book characters in a similar vein to his previous successes for the company. These talks come following Gunn’s success with DC properties The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.

Gunn’s Peacemaker was a success, setting records and reflecting well on the Suicide Squad movie it was spun off from, which also saw great success. While excelling with these DC properties, Gunn has also seen similar success with his ongoing Marvel commitments, most notably steering both mainline and spinoff projects featuring The Guardians of the Galaxy for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite the two being at odds, Gunn has been confident and vocal about his future with the Marvel and DC franchises.

Having successfully rehabilitated the Suicide Squad and launched Peacemaker into the role of unlikely fan favorite, Gunn is riding high at Warner Bros. DIscovery, with higher-ups likely very willing to give the genre veteran a listening ear. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn has once again started talks with execs at the company to head up superhero projects based on the extensive DC comics IP at Warner Bros.’ disposal. For Gunn, one of few creatives who has worked for both Marvel and DC, interest tracks with the company’s vision going forward, with an insider confirming that DC properties were definitely on the table.

Also confirmed by the report is the involvement of Peter Safran in the talks with Gunn, suggesting that whatever plans are cooking might be a collaborative effort by the two filmmakers. Safran has also had his share of success at Warner Bros., having served as a producer on Shazam! and Aquaman and reprising his efforts by working on the previously-delayed sequel projects of both titles. While there is no word yet on what hero or property the duo has their eye on, speculation has it that the higher-ups might see the creative potential to put out another Superman project featuring Henry Cavill.

With this show of initiative and his recent success with DC-based projects for WB, Gunn might find himself taking on some of the responsibilities of a general overseer, as Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav has so far been unable to find anyone interested in the role of leader for the DCEU. While Matt Reeves also finds himself in an arguably more auspicious position at the company, Gunn has already shown far more ability in terms of putting together a shared universe and will build on his success with more spin-offs featuring Suicide Squad characters and reprisals of tried and true roles from both the movie and Peacemaker.

While everyone is certainly interested in seeing what Gunn can do next within the popular genre, some fans might worry that the showrunner is spreading himself thin. There has already been speculation for quite some time that newer projects are holding him back from working on a much-anticipated The Suicide Squad sequel and expanding on what he’s already done. But with sequels, renewals, and new covert projects ideas converging in the near future, fans are likely to find out just how he intends to navigate the workload sooner rather than later.

The Suicide Squad is available to stream on HBO Max.
