Adriana Chechik was one of the content creators invited to TwitchCon San Diego this year. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse after she took part in the exhibit under Lenovo and Intel. The booth in question involved gladiator-style matches between content creators in a large foam pit. Chechik is only one of the people who left the exhibit with injuries, but hers are by far the worst of the bunch.

This all points to some serious negligence on the part of the management. And other creators are speaking out, questioning the safety precautions that were in place for the entire exhibit. They’ve also raised the issue of liability, pointing fingers at Lenovo, Intel, as well as Twitch as a whole. Given the severity of the circumstances, it seems the streaming company is going to have to make some serious changes for future events.

Foam Pit Injuries at TwitchCon San Diego 2022

The foam pit at TwitchCon San Diego was a joint exhibit under Lenovo and Intel. Its main attraction was the Face Off challenge, wherein two Twitch streamers had to stand on raised pedestals and try to push the other off with a foam noodle. Streamers like ludwig and xQc participated in the TwitchCon tournament without a hitch, but others weren’t as lucky.

Streamer LochVaness was just one who left the booth with an injury, a dislocated knee. However, the worst case is by far Adriana Chechik’s injury at the TwitchCon booth. She broke her back in two places after jumping off the pedestal and into the pit. These injuries took place because there was no proper cushioning under all the foam – just hard concrete. Even worse is the fact that the commentators were encouraging people to jump into the pit, even saying that they were “all about safety” at their booth.

TwitchCon Needs to Be Tighter with Its Safety Measures

YouTube creator Josh Strife Hayes, known for his past comments on New World’s sausage chat meme, weighed in on the situation since he had worked at a trampoline park in the past. According to him, foam pits were at the very least 2 meters deep with springy, wooden floors that could bend and even break just to lessen the impact of a bad fall. He then says that the TwitchCon foam pit was extremely unsafe: “There is no way that two foam blocks on top of concrete is going to protect anyone.” If anything, this shows that the team behind the Face Off challenge didn’t bring in an expert that could instruct them on how to make the foam pit a safe play area, which should have been a requirement in the first place.

Twitch has yet to comment on Chechik’s condition and the foam pit fiasco, but the company will have to make the necessary changes to its health and safety measures when it comes to booths hosted by other organizations, especially those that involve rough, physical contact. It isn’t enough to simply allow third parties to set up their exhibit at the convention. The TwitchCon team also needs to exercise due diligence in ensuring all its booths are as safe as can be for its participants.

This is only one of the issues surrounding the recent TwitchCon, but it’s the most damning given that it was a direct result of negligence on the part of Lenovo, Intel, and Twitch as a whole. Had the companies involved considered the proper safety measures for their exhibit, then these injuries would have never happened. If Twitch wants to right its company image, it needs to issue a proper apology to those involved as well as rethink the safety regulations of its future events. The same goes for the team behind the Lenovo and Intel booth.
