“Present For You”

Tired of his constant life of being hassled by his classmates and family (as well as being shocked by Lum), Ataru decides to run away from home. He soon discovers that his family and friends have taken to TV to look for him, and in his rush to get away, he ends up bumping into a beautiful woman with a supposed heart problem. The woman reveals herself to be a shrine maiden, and tells Ataru that he is cursed with unbelievable amounts of bad luck. Despite Ataru getting up to his usual perverted antics, the woman tells him that she will perform an exorcism to rid him of his horrendous bad luck.

The woman takes Ataru back to her house, where it is revealed that her name is Sakura. Her name gives Ataru an apprehensive feeling, one that is confirmed when Sakura’s mother is revealed to be the spitting image of Cherry, the monk that Ataru met last episode. Ataru runs away, but he is caught by Sakura and forced to take part in the exorcism. However, Sakura’s medical problems interfere with the exorcism as more and more demons and spirits begin to swarm Ataru.

Suddenly, Sakura’s problems disappear, and she realizes that her health problems were being caused by demons. Those same demons stopped haunting her and started haunting Ataru, curing her of all of her medical issues. Sakura quickly performs an exorcism to get rid of the demons for good, but the Grim Reaper suddenly appears in its place and strikes Ataru, supposedly killing him. As Cherry congratulates his niece on getting over her health problems, Ataru lies comatose in a hospital, but springs back to life the moment a pretty nurse enters the room.

“The Yellow Ribbon Of Happiness”

The second part of the episode starts with a familiar scene: Lum shocking Ataru for trying to pick up women. Fed up with Lum’s overbearing personality, Ataru begs Cherry for some way to get rid of Lum’s powers so that he can finally be free of her. Unfortunately for him, Lum was listening in, but Cherry promises Ataru to find some way of sealing Lum’s powers.

Some time later, Ataru’s friend comes to visit with a package from Cherry. The box contains a yellow ribbon and a letter from Cherry, telling Ataru to tie the ribbon around Lum’s horns. The ribbon will inhibit Lum’s powers, and Ataru will be the only one able to remove the ribbon. When Lum appears, Ataru convinces her to put on the ribbon by offering it as a romantic present to her. Lum is overjoyed to receive a present from her “husband”, and happily puts it on. However, when she leaps out of the window in order to show off her ribbons around town, she quickly discovers her powers have disappeared with a nasty fall to the ground.

Ataru and his friend tail Lum as she wonders what has happened to her powers. Lum tries to shock one of Ataru’s passing classmates, which leads him to believe that she has fallen for him. Realizing that something is wrong, Lum tells Ataru that she might be sick. In the middle of the ruckus, Shinobu appears, and Lum takes the chance to flaunt her new ribbon. Shinobu tries to grab the ribbon, but Ataru stops her to keep his deception from being discovered. Shinobu, however, misunderstands it as him choosing Lum over her, and runs off in tears.

Back at home, Ataru’s friends try to get in between him and Lum, but Ataru kicks them out. Lum, having seen Ataru be protective over her, thinks that her relationship with him has improved, and decides that since she can’t go back to her ship or use her powers anymore, she’ll stay with him for life instead. Realizing that his plan has suddenly made things worse for him, Ataru tries to remove Lum’s ribbon. However, Lum refuses, and when Ataru tries to take it off by force, his friends outside assume he is trying to assault Lum. Furious that they have intruded again, Lum starts throwing things at Ataru’s friends, one of which being the box Cherry sent Ataru. The letter ends up falling out of the box, and Ataru’s plan is revealed to Lum. Lum furiously beats Ataru and demands he take the ribbon off, then punishes him with a super-powered shock with her restored powers.

Misfortune At Every Turn

The second episode of Urusei Yatsura establishes the perfect balance of schadenfreude and hilarity that the series is known for. Ataru is battered from beginning to end, and while he may not deserve all of the punishment he gets, he certainly doesn’t make things easier on himself. Sakura establishes herself as a fun and quirky character from the get-go, and as a rather important character in the series, fans can expect to see her more often.

The episode ends with a post-credits scene of Shutaro Mendo falling out of the sky. Mendo is one of the main supporting characters in Urusei Yatsura, and his involvement surely means that shenanigans are only going to ramp up from here. The main cast has basically fully assembled at this point, which means that fans can expect some of the more absurd plot points in Urusei Yatsura to start popping up.
