Apex Legends has been at the top of the battle royale genre for a while, competing with titles such as PUBG and Fortnite for the top spot. Each seasonal update adds a new character (playable Legend in-game with special abilities) to the roster that changes the way we play the game and interact with each map. The developers have done a fantastic job of bringing new content, map changes, and gameplay changes to the game to keep it feeling fun and fresh for veterans and even new players to the game. Halloween is right around the corner and brings a whole range of content from cosmetics and skins to gameplay updates and modes.

Fight or Fright’ is the latest content update for Apex Legends that brings with it the new mode Shadow Royale. This mode changes the formulae for the standard Battle Royale mode with an exciting change that’ll get you in the spooky season spirit. Here are ten things you need to know about Shadow Royale.

10/10 Fight Or Fright

Fight or Fright is the official name of the new Halloween-inspired in-game event. This event will oversee all the new additions to the game including the cosmetics, game modes, and spooky atmosphere. Last year, the devs switched up the Halloween theme with the Monsters Within event.

This brought a new Arenas map (Encore) and the returning game mode of Shadow Royale. With a switch back to Fight or Fright this year, we may see some old cosmetics returning from the grave.

9/10 Cosmetics

Although this year’s cosmetics aren’t directly tied to the Shadow Royale game mode, the event will bring discounts and ways to earn specific skins without paying a cent. Although players can directly purchase cosmetics directly from the store using Apex Coins, players will also be able to use Crafting Metals and Apex Packs to get exclusive limited-time skins.

As well as this, the event currency has been replaced with non-event loot drops giving players the opportunity to earn more rewards in total. By unlocking all the Halloween cosmetics during the event (24 different skins), players will unlock the Lifeline Heirloom set for free.

8/10 Prize Track

Shadow Royale also comes with a Prize Track that will allow players to unlock new badges, skins, stat trackers, music packs, and more! This only adds to the already existing roster of cosmetics available for purchase through the store.

With consistent unlocks throughout the event there is plenty of progression for everyone to dig their teeth into along with XP boosts to help players along the way. The final reward is the Swamp Creature skin for Sentinel.

7/10 Map Changes

Shadow Royale will bring a whole new spooky vibe to one of our favorite maps, Olympus. This overhaul is called Olympus After Dark and it’s sure to send a shiver down your spine. With much darker lighting and small details around the map, these changes will put players in the Halloween spirit.

This said, there aren’t any major changes to the Olympus layout, so players still are able to navigate their way through if they’re familiar with the map.

6/10 Atmosphere

Along with all the small map changes, comes an entirely new atmosphere. This Olympus doesn’t feel like the Utopia fans are probably used to. In Shadow Royale, players will be terrified with hundreds of ghosts haunting them alongside other teams hunting them down.

If players are fans of the horror genre they will feel right at home in this seasonal mode. We haven’t even mentioned the terrifying announcer voice of Shadow Revenant!

5/10 Shadow Revenant Announcer

Remember that friendly voice that notified players of updates during the match? GONE! She’s been replaced with the menacing growl of Shadow Revenant. This change is only in the Shadow Royale mode and comes with some awesome new voice lines even frequent players may not have heard before in-game.

Revenant seems to be the main character every Halloween in Apex and with such a haunting past, it only seems right that he’s overseeing this new mode.

4/10 Availability And Dates

Shadow Royale is unfortunately an LTM, meaning it’s only available for a short amount of time before it’s gone, but not forever! We will probably see this return year after year as it’s definitely one of the community’s favorite modes.

Shadow Royale will be available during Week 1 and Week 4 of the Fight or Fright event. These dates are Oct 4 – Oct 11 and Oct 25 – Nov 1. This means fans will get two chances to experience this annual mode.

3/10 No Respawn

Unlike the other game modes in Apex Legends, Shadow Royale comes with a major change; no respawns! This may seem strange at first but it does add some intensity to the mode meaning each of your team’s life is much more valuable than before.

This means respawn points are gone creating a new dynamic on the map as these hotspots won’t be as busy as before. However, this change is replaced with a terrifying alternative in the form of shadow players. Although this may not change the Legend players play with, it’s key to know which characters fans enjoy playing and what works well with your team when jumping into this mode.

2/10 Shadow Players

Shadow players are the key gameplay change that makes Shadow Royale unique to other game modes and even other titles’ LTM game modes. Players may find characters like Vantage particularly useful for locating these Shadows and repositioning themselves to get away from large groups.

When a player dies, they are unable to respawn after being taken from the ‘down but not out’ position. At this point, they return as a shadow with special mobility and movement but much lower health and no weapons. These shadows will support the rest of the surviving team until the whole team is out. This creates some hectic moments mid-game when there are lots of teams still competing to win.

1/10 Badges

As mentioned before, players will unlock new badges through the limited-time prize track in the Fight or Fright event. These new badges include Shadow Slayer, Shadow Guardian, Shadow Champion, and Shadow Master.

These can all be unlocked through killing enemies, reviving allies, winning games, and earning all the badges during the limited-time event. These can then be added to any of the legend’s banners to show off any spooky season skills players may have gained.

Apex Legends is currently available on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Origin for PC.
