Season 1 of The Midnight Club, Mike Flanagan’s latest horror series for Netflix, is terrifying and yet it has so much heart. Flanagan’s three other shows are stand-alones with vivid ghosts, solid mysteries, and conclusions that tie a bow on each story. But The Midnight Club ends on a cliffhanger, which suggests that more episodes could be coming. According to Forbes, the show had 18.7 million viewership hours the week of October 3rd-9th, and was only number four. Since the show premiered on Friday October 7th, this wasn’t the best news, which brings up the question of whether there will be a season 2.

If there are more episodes of The Midnight Club, there are a few characters and plotlines that the show should definitely focus on.

One of the biggest shocks from the season 1 finale of The Midnight Club is finding out that Dr. Georgina Stanton (Heather Langenkamp) has a secret. Is she the daughter of Regina Ballard, a woman named Athena who is mentioned throughout the season? This is a Midnight Club mystery left unresolved and if the show comes back for a second season, it would be necessary to continue this plotline and explain it.

Brightcliffe seems to be Dr. Stanton’s pride and joy and she shares many encouraging words with the patients there throughout the season. But while she seems to care about the teenagers who are going through terrible things, could she be hiding dark secrets that no one knows about yet? There are a lot of questions about this character and a second season would have to delve into these.

A potential second season should also focus on the romance between Illonka (Iman Benson) and Kevin (Igby Rigney). These are two of the best characters on The Midnight Club and they share a sweet connection as they both are privy to the supernatural occurrences at the hospice. Since they see ghosts and figures that others don’t, they trust each other. Illonka is envious of Kevin’s girlfriend and the characters kiss at the end of season 1 and it seems like they will officially start dating. Season 2 should show what it’s like for two characters to fall in love while knowing that they don’t have much time left.

Season 2 should also deviate from basing the stories that the club tells on Christopher Pike’s books. Sandra (Annarah Cymone) shares a tale called “Gimme a Kiss,” which was a book published in 1988, and Illonka’s story “Witch” was a book published in 1990, to name just a few. While some of the stories are solid, especially the one told in the first episode that allows The Midnight Club to discuss jump scares, not all of them land. Sandra’s in particular is dull and melodramatic at the same time.

While it makes sense that season 1 of the show would want to adapt more of Pike’s work, it could be a good idea to tell some brand new scary stories. One of the most intriguing parts of season 1 is how some of the terrifying stories reflect what the characters are going through. Anya (Ruth Cood) shares “The Two Danas” about a teenage girl who clones herself so she can have fun and be young while also working hard to make her dancing dreams come true. This story is one of the scariest The Midnight Club moments. If new stories are created for season 2, then these tales could dive even deeper into these fascinating characters.

Illonka, for instance, tells “Witch” about a teenage girl wanting to fit in, which she can relate to. But the most fascinating thing about Illonka is her desire to go to college and learn and be part of the world, a dream that is tragically cut short. Illonka’s story in season 2 could share more of her ambitions and goals, which would paint an even more detailed picture of this well-written character.

Amesh (Sauriyan Sapkota) is one of the sweetest people on the show and while his romance with Natsuki (Aya Furukawa) is portrayed, viewers don’t see as much of Amesh as they would like. He’s such a fantastic character who tries to make jokes and help everyone feel better despite their tough experiences, and it would be nice to see more of Amesh in season 2 of the horror TV show.

Most of all, a second season should continue to flesh out the wonderful teenagers who are staying at Brightcliffe and being put in these terrible positions. The Midnight Club is one of Flanagan’s scariest shows, but the series also focuses on character development in every single episode, and fans want to see more of these smart and thoughtful teenagers.
