New Tales from the Borderlands presents a fun brand-new game for lovers of the space-based Borderlands series. There’s much to love in the latest installment of the series with the highly colorful outfit schemes and next-level technology displayed in the game. New Tales From the Borderlands takes inspiration from its predecessor Tales From the Borderlands, as publisher Telltale Games looks to build on the immense success of the prequel. Three new seemingly ordinary characters are the main focus of the story. The decision of Telltale Games to give players a glimpse into the lives of regular people in the Borderlands universe has been lauded by fans, as it opens up a whole new perspective to the capitalist city.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

New Tales From the Borderlands takes players on a journey through a sewer in search of one of the signature Vaults in an epic interactive narration. Interestingly, there are connections to other popular game releases seen in the game. The world of game development just so happens that every publisher takes something they like from another publisher’s release. So, when fans began noting similarities to the Metal Gear franchise, few were shocked, and many Metal Gear enjoyers felt a twinge of pride at seeing so many ideas of their favorite games used in another franchise. When a game’s feature is good enough for use in another, it is a telltale sign of masterful design.

The most notable of these similarities between Metal Gear and New Tales From the Borderlands is the use of a Cardboard box for stealth purposes. In Metal Gear, a cardboard box has been used by some of the fan base’s favorite characters and quickly became a signature of the series. The legendary Big Boss has used the cardboard box as a means of infiltration severally, as well as special forces operatives Solid Snake and Raiden. Perhaps the most famous use came in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, when Big Boss accompanied by the subcommander of Militaires Sans Frontieres, Kazuhira Miller used one to sneak into enemy territory, albeit unsuccessfully.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain also depicts special forces agent Venom Snake using a cardboard box in the Hospital Escape mission to rescue Miller in Afghanistan. The cardboard box, referred to as a Quick-deployment Personal Concealment System, is equipped with different camouflage variants and pop-up devices. Solid Snake used the box to infiltrate an enemy fortress called Outer Haven, sneaking past enemy scouts and surveillance cameras undetected. The agent would also use the box to infiltrate Zanzibar Land’s tower building and hide in an enemy truck.

In New Tales From the Borderlands, players use the cardboard box when going through the sewers in the game’s second chapter. Octavio, one of the three main characters in the game, uses a cardboard box in an attempt to sneak up on a guard. Just like the scene with Big Boss and Kazuhira Miller in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Octavio’s cover is blown as the guard easily sees through the ruse of the moving box. Despite discovering Octavio, the guard does not kill him, to the surprise of many players, but challenges him to a duel with Vaultlander Figurines. Octavio ends up defeating and gaining the guard’s figurine as a souvenir, along with safe passage across the bridge.

The gameplay trailer of New Tales From the Borderlands also features some suspiciously familiar tunes. During the scene where Octavio tries to use the cardboard box to sneak past a guard in the sewers, fans hear the famous Metal Gear sound effect for an Alert (!). A finer detail only Metal Gear Solid superfans will note is Octavio’s dialogue when talking to Paco. After a series of military-related questions, Octavio asks Paco a question “Weapons and equipment OSP?”. This line of dialogue comes from Metal Gear Solid.

New Tales From the Borderlands is available on October 21 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
