Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is going to have three unique character classes in its upcoming Special Ops mode. Unlike its 2019 predecessor, the new COD is going to offer a more in-depth Spec Ops experience, with several available missions and even an unprecedented Raid game mode coming later on, which is supposed to provide an endgame PvE activity that builds on top of the game’s core campaign mode.

Spec Ops, specifically, will take place in Al Mazrah, which is the new Warzone 2.0 map that’s coming with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Here, players will get to participate in three replayable missions that appear to be balancing the Spec Ops from 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 with the iteration of the mode that dropped in 2019’s Modern Warfare. Many specifics are still unknown, but Infinity Ward has apparently come up with a few novel additions in this regard.

The latest blog post from Infinity Ward goes into a bit more detail about this Call of Duty‘s Spec Ops mode, revealing that Modern Warfare 2 will have three Spec Ops missions at launch. To best tackle their objectives, players will be able to choose between the all-new Assault, Medic, and Recon character classes or Kits. These will be depicted through specialized Backpack items, each of which comes with its own PvE perks, gadgets, and more.

The Recon Kit will therefore have access to the Heartbeat Sensor and the Spotter Scope gadgets, for example. Medic, on the other hand, will have the Revive Pistol Field Upgrade, while the Assault class comes with a mini-Juggernaut sort of kit, allowing them to tank damage and dish out punishment to the enemies. This promises a sort of return to form for Spec Ops in COD, as the 2009 classic allowed players to choose from a few available weapons before starting each mission.

Odds are that Modern Warfare 2‘s Gunsmith 2.0 will come into play during Spec Ops missions, too, as none of the revealed Kits appear to have access only to specific weapon types. However, players will be able to upgrade their class of choice using earned Spec Ops Stars, and Infinity Ward specifically recommends leveling up at least one Kit to level 5 before the Raid comes out.

WIth campaign early access for Modern Warfare 2 dropping on October 21, pre-order owners should have plenty of time to properly familiarize themselves with the title’s core gameplay loop and progression systems. It’s worth pointing out, however, that Spec Ops won’t be available until the full launch on October 28. This means that fans of co-op in COD will need to wait a bit longer until their content of choice is finally out.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is set to launch on October 28, 2022, on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
