A song mod for Trombone Champ features an iconic Final Fantasy 7 song, and it features a hilarious take over from the villain Sephiroth.

As Trombone Champ is still relatively popular with gamers as of late, one player has made a custom chart that starts with players being killed by Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7. While custom charts aren’t an official feature in the game yet, some fans have managed to mod the game on their own to include new songs. Doing this requires more than just adding the song in, but also requires programming custom notes.

Where Sephiroth comes into play is that this chart is for “One Winged Angel,” the song that plays during the Safer Sephiroth fight late into the title. The version that a fan going by “Henry Zhou’s Textbook” on YouTube has added into the indie game hit is the version found in the Advent Children movie. In Final Fantasy series history, “One Winged Angel” is rather poignant as it’s the first song in a Final Fantasy game that featured lyrics.

The Trombone Champ map starts out innocent enough; it sees the player in front of a picture of Sephiroth as they first start playing. However, a few seconds later, the player is stabbed from above with the bumper of a black and white trombone. The camera pans upwards to reveal the culprit is Sephiroth before the FF villain takes over and continues the song on a rocky cliff side. Sephiroth killing the musician avatar may seem random at first, but it’s a reference to the famous Final Fantasy 7 scene where Sephiroth drops from above to kill Aerith in front of Cloud.

The death of Aerith has been used as a meme among many Final Fantasy 7 fans over the years, even in daily Smash Bros. pictures taken by lead developer Masahiro Sakurai. Alongside the hilarious reference, the video used to showcase the chart has making Sephiroth bob up and down to the melody of the song, and the lyrics are shown by be sung by a group of people on the other side of the crevice that Sephiroth is playing his trombone on.

Fans are loving the custom map and having a good laugh at it. Comments on the YouTube video are joking about what’s in the mod, such as one user saying the fact that the slide is the same size as Sephiroth’s sword, the six-to-eight feet long Masamune, is “brilliant.”

For the fans that are interested in playing the custom chart themselves, there’s a link in the description of the YouTube video that leads players to the resources necessary to install the mod. However, some fans may find it difficult without official mod support. Hopefully once Trombone Champ adds the feature, more players can experience this hilarious map without trouble.

Trombone Champ is available now for PC.
