A weird PlayStation 4 bug shows that gamers were playing online in 1970, although there seems to be a specific reason behind it.

A strange PS4 bug shows that a group of friends was playing online and exchanging messages in 1970. The PlayStation 4 is one of the best-selling consoles of all time and Sony has released several critically acclaimed exclusives for the console. Games like God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, The Last of Us Part 2, and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End all launched as PS4 exclusives.

The PS4 also features a relatively simple UI. One row displayed all the games in a straight line, while another consisted of various OS-level operations, such as party chat, messages, and a list of downloads. Players can easily switch between the rows to go to their desired menu or game, and the PS5’s UI seems to be a more complex version of the ideas that were generated during the PS4 generation. However, one PlayStation fan recently encountered a funny bug with the console.

In a recent post on Reddit, a user named csakif25__ shared an image from one of the PS4’s menus. It looks like the player was trying to create a new group with their friends, but the PS4 system mentioned that all selected users were already in a group together. The user is prompted to select a group from a list, and they noticed that the date listed on the right says January 1, 1970. The original PlayStation came out in Japan in 1994, so this absurd date is set 24 years before PS1’s launch.

The player jokingly mentions in the post’s title that they remember playing Grand Theft Auto with their friends in 1970. Another user claims that it feels like GTA 5 came out 52 years ago, as it has been an extremely long time since the game’s release. This error may be a common occurrence, as another player mentions seeing it on their console. Fans can find other similar instances online featuring the same date. As an example, one PlayStation fan reported that a trophy they earned in Grand Theft Auto 4 showed January 1, 1970, as unlock date.

The date in the image is not random, and it appears to have significance in the world of computing. The exact point in time at 00:00:00 UTC on January 1, 1970, is known Unix epoch, and Unix time denotes the number of seconds that have passed since then. It looks like the PS4 system was not able to get the correct time and date, so it defaulted to January 1, 1970.
