John Carpenter recently did an interview with the AV Club in promotion for Halloween Ends, and given his outspoken nature on video games, the conversation transitioned into what he is currently playing and his favorites of 2022. Naughty Dog was brought up in the conversation regarding the classic horror producer’s enjoyment of older games, such as Jak and Daxter. John Carpenter said that he got stuck on a generator puzzle in The Last of Us 2 and was unable to finish the game. Naughty Dog shared a link to the interview on Twitter, and tagged John Carpenter in the tweet, clarifying what accessibility settings can be altered to tackle the puzzle, as well as expressing how honored they were that he had played the game. In the interview, John Carpenter said that he wanted to keep going, but that the generator stopped him, so maybe he will now return to the game for another attempt.

John Carpenter did not know about The Last of Us HBO Max series in development, although he was excited at the prospect of it, which may give him more of an incentive to return to The Last of Us 2. He also described other games that he’s enjoyed this year, as well as reiterated interest in wanting to make a Dead Space movie.

Based on the interview, John Carpenter seems to have a humble perspective on video games, as he enjoys them in his time of relaxation and tries not to think about them too critically. He describes video games as a big part of his life and contrasts them to making movies, which he expresses as stressful and hard work. Thanks to the accessibility settings in The Last of Us 2, he may return to the game with updated thoughts.

The Last of Us 2 is available on PS4.
